Lapland Climate
Eventhough Lapland is almost totally below the Arctic Circle, the weather in Lapland is not as cold as you might think. This is mainly because warm Golf Stream in the Atlantic which heats the climate in the Scandinavia.
Lapland has for different seasons and the temperatures vary accordingly:
Summer (June-August):
temperature differs surprisingly little form the average temperature of the European continent. It may happen that temperature rises over +30 C but temperatures closer to +20s during the days are more common.
Autumn (September-November):
In the Autumn when the days get shorter again the average temperatures are somewhere between 0 and +10. Lapland gets usually the first snowfalls in the end of September but it wont usually be before end of October permanently covers the ground.
Winter (December-April):
The winter temperatures can vary anywhere between 0 and -40 C. The average temperature in January is -14 C. But the cold is not biting because the air is dry. Many years there is as much as a meter of snow and it usually lasts until May.
Spring (April-June):
Spring is a time of rapid and violent awakening of the nature. The snow disappears during the first part of the May. The average temperature in the spring is somewhere between 0 and +10 C. In the spring the nights can be still quite cold and the days warm. |
